There is nothing ugly

There is nothing ugly; I never saw an ugly thing in my life: for let the form of an object be what it may, — light, shade, and perspective will always make it beautiful.

— John Constable (b. June 1, 1776).

The Killing Shed

Equinox winds from the west,
hot trees fold over and cringe,
a lamb’s throat is cut.

The ‘straight’ photographer

For the serious photographer with a confirmed belief in the artistic worth of ‘straight’ photography – the so-called ‘poetic documentary’ mode – these are trying times. More than ever, most of the world seems to think that the simple photograph is not enough. The photographic artist who still stubbornly works within the broad tradition of Atget or Weston, even Frank or Friedlander, is deemed wilfully anachronistic, a member of a mutated, almost extinct species.

— Gerry Badger, from Creative Camera (1987).

Bader Street

A Sense of Place
It seems to be all right with me. As far as I can see it’s not a bad street…that incident happened with that child, but it’s not an ongoing thing around here…the neighbours all get on well, but we don’t get in each others faces.
