Landscape Notes

Observations of places and things in a disconnected postmodern world

Category: Interior Landscapes

The interior landscape is really no different to the exterior landscape. Except to say that the interior landscape, for the most part, is entirely composed by man, in that way you could argue that interiors are an extremely artificial landscape. Nonetheless, like the exterior landscape, the interior landscape offers us some insight in to mans interaction with the objects and elements about him and how culture, peoples ideas, and life modify environments.

Two Chairs and Accordian Room Divider

To create this room, someone, about 50 years ago, presumably an architect, has laboured over drawings and applied creative thought by the application of physical and mental energy to find a desirable outcome that delivers a functional and aesthetically pleasing space for learning. Thereafter, a steady stream of people have used this space, been influenced by it, and have responded to it.

Animals Inside

There is a great need by man to conquer nature. Whether it be a pioneering family clearing the land to grow cattle, or a property developer bulldozing hills to build homes. The urge to conquer is closely aligned with that of our need for survival; how else could we live if we did not have the necessary drive to subdue the earth and farm its resources. Does that drive have an entirely practical basis or is it acceptable for man to find some respectful enjoyment or reward in his earthly wrestling with nature. After all, even the man who adopts a life of pure hermitage seeking to be at one with nature is still required to subdue nature for the sake of his basic needs of food and shelter.
